Is an Electric Toothbrush Ideal for Braces?

ALPHARETTA, GA – When a person wears braces, whether they are ceramic braces or the traditional stainless steel variety, they need to know exactly what cleaning methods are safe to use. While the common stainless steel braces are sturdy and able to withstand great pressure, other varieties of braces, such as ceramic braces, may be more susceptible to harm during a harsh brushing, getting damaged in the process. So, is an electric toothbrush ideal for braces, or is another method more preferable for adults who wear braces?

A 2010 study published in the American Journal of Orthodontics & Dentofacial Orthopedics showed that an electric toothbrush far outperforms a manual toothbrush for those requiring adult orthodontic care. Plaque removal from braces and teeth is far more effective with an electric toothbrush than with a regular toothbrush. Since braces can stain teeth and food debris often gets stuck in them, an electric toothbrush is the best option for any adult worried about their dental health and appearance while wearing braces. The same study also showed that, while a regular electric toothbrush works to rid the teeth of excess plaque very well, one with an advanced orthodontic head outperforms even the standard variety of electric toothbrush and is ideal in most cases. However, ceramic and gold styles of braces may not be able to withstand the heavier pressure an orthodontic head may produce.

For this reason, allowing Dr. Nima Hajibaik to assist in the choosing of an electric toothbrush or other means of brushing is a safe option. If an adult patient has an electric toothbrush already, they can also ask if it is safe to continue using it while they are wearing braces to make sure they are not damaging their mouth when they brush.
