Finally Getting Your Braces Off: What Now?

You’ve been through a year or even multiple years with braces, and now it’s time to get them off! It’s time to celebrate!

It’s also time to review what happens next, because your orthodontic journey isn’t quite over. We want to make sure your teeth stay in place, and that will require some discipline on your part.

Retainer Wear and Care

Now that your braces are off, you’ll have a retainer made to fit the unique shape of your mouth. At first, you’ll need to wear your retainer exactly how your Johns Creek Orthodontist recommends. Later your orthodontist may reduce how often you wear it. Keeping your smile intact will rely almost entirely on how diligently you wear your retainer.

When you’re not wearing your retainer, keep it safe in its container. Don’t sit it on the floor where you might accidentally step on it. Don’t leave it on the kitchen counter where it may get knocked or smashed by someone else in your family. Don’t leave it where your family pet can run off with it. Don’t wrap your retainer up in a napkin, or else it may accidentally get tossed in the trash. Don’t slide your retainer into your pocket. Always put it in its case when it’s not in your mouth.

Clean your retainer regularly. You should brush it with a toothbrush without any toothpaste when you brush your teeth in the morning and at night. At mealtimes, rinse your retainer with water before you return it to your mouth. You can also soak your retainer in a mix of mouthwash and water. Take care of your retainer, and it will take care of you.

Follow Up Orthodontic Visits

Just because your braces are off doesn’t mean we don’t want to see you! We will schedule follow up appointments to make sure your teeth are staying in place. These appointments also give you an opportunity to discuss how your retainer is working, and you can also ask any questions that may be on your mind. These appointments are integral to the longterm success of your smile.

Regular Dental Cleanings

Now that you’ve invested time, energy, and money in your new smile, you will want to keep it healthy and clean. Make sure you schedule regular dental appointments to have your teeth cleaned by a professional. Continue to be proactive about your oral health, and commit to two cleanings every year. This will keep your smile healthy and beautiful, and it will also benefit the rest of your body. Did you know oral health is a large indicator of one’s overall health? Poor oral health is correlated with poor heart health, so regular dental cleanings and examinations are really an investment in your whole body.

Congratulations on your newly straightened teeth! Flash your beautiful smile often, and keep it healthy and clean. If you want to know more about braces and how they can help your smile, contact our practice for a consultation.
