You’ve probably heard about the Invisalign system. Its clear plastic aligners give patients better smiles without the permanence of fixed braces. We get a lot of patients who are interested in learning more about the system. They want to know if Invisalign is the best choice for tooth alignment.
But how do you know if Invisalign is right for you?
You have a mild orthodontic case.
Invisalign works very well to treat milder orthodontic cases. Invisalign closes gaps in your teeth, helps space out overly crowded teeth, and aligns crooked teeth. Patients love hearing that their mild crowded, gapped, and crooked teeth can be corrected with Invisalign.
When there’s a case that’s more complicated, your orthodontist may suggest fixed braces instead of Invisalign. For instance, we encourage patients with underbites or overbites to get braces for best results. Patients who need jaw correction will also see better results with braces.
You are very disciplined.
Invisalign works best with diligent patients. Since you can remove the aligners anytime, you may be tempted to take them out for social occasions. You may forget to put them in after eating a meal, or you may consciously decide to wear them less frequently than recommended.
But Invisalign can’t work if you aren’t wearing your aligners. If you have the discipline to wear your aligners the recommended 20 to 22 hours a day, then you’ll be a good Invisalign patient. It’s just common sense; the more you wear them, the faster and more efficiently they’ll straighten your smile.
You already have healthy gums and teeth.
Without a strong foundation of healthy gums, the teeth won’t be able to shift properly. We only recommend Invisalign to patients who are committed to their oral care and have thriving gums and teeth. Patients with signs of tooth decay aren’t good Invisalign candidates.
One benefit of using Invisalign is that you can continue to floss and brush normally. Braces can be a pain to floss between, but with Invisalign — pop! — just remove them, floss, and put them back in.
You’re an adult or an older teen.
Many adults and teens like the subtlety of Invisalign. You can go to work, school, and social functions without missing a beat. You can smile confidently while your aligners work their magic. But we don’t recommend using Invisalign if you’re a child or a younger teenager. Invisalign is more effective in patients whose jaws are fully developed, therefore adults and older teens make better Invisalign candidates.
If you fall into each of these categories, there’s a good chance that Invisalign can help you smile your brightest.
The Invisalign system is attractive for many reasons, but remember that in some cases, you’d be better off straightening your teeth with braces, not Invisalign. The best way to decide is to come in for an evaluation. Every patient has different needs, and we can help you decide what option is best for you and your one of a kind smile.
